People doing what other people do

Awesome example of the ability of a group to form in the right conditions. Molecules in an agitated state. The Herd in action.

Ask yourself why one guy wasn't left dancing alone?

Via Seth Godin. But also read Herd.

  1. Wow! Back when I was around 16 - my friends and I by way of a social experiment set about trying to see what affect we could have on a mass group of people. One of the things we often did was to find a high rise building and start looking up.. just standing there looking up. We weren't just being horrible - it all went into a college project.

Usually within about 5 minutes we'd often find around 40 people standing behind us, doing the same. This kind of stuff really interested me at the time, and still does.. It's a shame I didn't follow it up, and stupidly pigeon holed myself as an Animator.

  2. Yep. done the same starting a Mexican wave at the 02 at the Madness gig last Christmas. What it took for me (and for you) was a group of people to instigate in the first place. I wonder if I hadn't been with my mates whether I'd have had the balls to stand up and try to start a wave all alone. I think that's one of Seth's points. The other is about person three - the significant impact HE had as an individual.

The rate of change is so rapid it's difficult for one person to keep up to speed. Let's pool our thoughts, share our reactions and, who knows, even reach some shared conclusions worth arriving at?
